  ALPINE COACHES

AVSC is proud of the outstanding caliber of our Program Directors and coaching staff. They embody our core values of commitment, teamwork and integrity. They are terrific role models and mentors and their dedication throughout the season is the reason for our athletes' success both on and off the hill. AVSC's legacy of athletic excellence is thanks to their efforts.

AVSC Alpine Director Greg Needell
This will be Greg's first year at AVSC. Greg was a U.S. Ski Team World Cup coach from 2002 to 2009 under Head Coach Phil McNichol, helping lead the men's team including Bode Miller and Ted Ligety to 43 wins, 105 podium finishes and 264 top-ten results. Greg grew up ski racing in Stratton Mountain, Vermont, has a distinguished career in both racing and coaching. Greg raced in the NCAA Division 1 for St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY and served as team co-captain in 1986. After college, Greg spent five years coaching at Stratton Mountain School as the Head Women's coach and the Head J2 Men's coach. In 1997, Greg became the Head Coach of the Mammoth Mountain Ski Team in California. In 2002, Greg was asked to join the U.S. Ski Team as a World Cup Slalom and Giant Slalom coach.
AVSC Head Ability Coach Kent Towlerton
Kent is starting his 2nd year as Head Ability Coach for AVSC. Kent has coached at all levels and uses his experience to help the athletes prepare for the future. Before Aspen, he was head coach for: Mt. Bachelor Ski Foundation, Western Region Division, USST Europa Cup Women, and University of Wyoming. He's been named USSA Coach of the Year twice, and currently has 4 athletes on the U.S. Ski Team.
AVSC Age Class Head Coach Alice Black
Alice Black has been coaching at AVSC for the past 5 years. She initially coached the J4 and J3 teams before becoming the head Age Class Coach. Alice started coaching after racing for the University of New Hampshire's NCAA team for four years and being a member of the Romanian Junior National Team for two years.
AVSC J3 Age Class Coach Pat Callahan
USSA COACH OF THE YEAR !!!
Although it seems that way, Pat Callahan didn't actually found the Aspen Valley Ski/Snowboard Club in the 1930's. Pat started racing in 1979 with the Aspen Ski Club. Although he spent a year as the absolute-worst ranked racer in Colorado, he soon worked his way up to a Top 20 ranking in the nation, knocking on the door of the US Ski Team. Surprisingly, his success as a professional mogul skier paid his way for him to be a ski racer. After a successful career as a Division 1 racer at Middlebury College, Pat took to ski coaching. After two years of coaching at AVSC, he took the reins as Head Coach of St. Lawrence University in 1994. He coached future Olympian Thomas Vonn and was named 1998 NCAA Coach of the Year. In 1999 he returned home and has coached hundreds of athletes at AVSC, with many making the US Ski Team, including current World Cup racer Wiley Maple. Besides coaching at AVSC, he has also coached at Valle Nevado, Chile and Bariloche, Argentina. Pat holds numerous positions within USSA. Besides being head of the Rocky/Central region, Pat has been Chair of Age Class racing for the Rocky Division for the past 8 years. He is also highly ranked as a race Referee, Timer and Technical Delegate. Head Age Class Coach, Alice Black, often quips that Pat wrote the rule book, which is only partially true. A former instructor of both water skiing and windsurfing, Pat remains active in those sports. He also enjoys mountain biking and long distance cycling. He has ridden his bike through all 48 states of the Continental USA. Alaska and Hawaii beckon.
AVSC J3 Age Class Coach Ramsay Hill
Ramsay is starting her third season as a coach at AVSC.  She grew up in Gilford, NH, and skied for The Holderness School.  Ramsey went to Middlebury College and spent four years on their powerhouse varsity ski team. She majored in Environmental Studies and English. In addition to coaching for AVSC, Ramsay is an assistant teacher at Aspen Country Day.  She enjoys skiing and wearing 80's one pieces.
