14 year-old Bobby Moyer and 13 year-old Devon Cardamone maintained their streak of one-two finishes in slalom at the Steamboat Smartwool Series races this past weekend, Jan. 31st - Feb 1st. The AVSC J3 racers continued to post solid results against a field that included top racers from CU and U.S Ski Team prospects in both giant slalom and slalom on Mount Werner hill at Steamboat Springs.
Summit's Nicole Anderson won Saturdays giant slalom race for the J3s and AVSC's Julia Mueller-Ristine finished in a rare tie for second place (sixth overall). According to coach Pat Callahan the rest of the AVSC J3 women also skied well on Saturday with Ilona Schwarz finishing 18th, Isabelle Woodrow in 20th and Keile Kropf in 28th place.
The AVSC men had a tougher time, with Devon Cardamone being the top finisher in 14th overall and sixth for the J3s. Michael Mondry was 34th overall and Julian Lambert was 38th.
Three members of the AVSC women's team placed in the top 25 out of 52 total skiers in Sundays slalom. Julia Mueller-Ristine finished 16th, Isabelle Woodrow was 17th and Keile Kropf was 22nd. "They all had decent runs in the morning then really turned it on in the afternoon run," said Callahan.
Both Moyer and Cardamone shined in Sundays slalom. "They both skied very intelligently on a tricky technical course," said Callahan. "They attacked where they could and put a lot of time between them and their nearest competitors." Not only did the duo finish one-two for their age class, they bested several older skiers in the process. Callahan commented on how well rounded both athletes are in both technical and speed events. "Our guys have been doing extremely well in Super-G, so it's great to see them also top the podium in slalom."
