AVSC Siblings Sam and Joanna Coffey Each Win at Keystone GS

Snowmass Village brother and sister duo Sam and Joanna Coffey each posted a victory at the Millennium Bank Cup Junior FIS giant slalom races in Keystone this past Sunday, January 3rd. Joanna, an Aspen High School senior, set the pace in the morning with her win over a field of 77 other racers. "It was a good way to start the season," said AVSC Alpine Ability Head Coach Kent Towlerton. "Joanna finished third the day before and really kept her poise after having to rerun the course when the racer in front of her crashed during her first run." Coffey stayed on her skis even as several top competitors failed to complete the second run of the race. "She skied smart and used her head," said Towlerton. "It's hard to refocus but she stayed motivated throughout the race." AVSC teammate Katie Ryan finished second, less than one second behind Coffey and Sara Andrews had another top-ten result for the Club in seventh place.

Brother Sam, an AVSC post-grad athlete and sophomore at Denver University, matched Joanna's top finish with his own win in Sunday afternoon men's race. "Sam has put a lot of effort into conditioning and getting ready for the season. He had a very fast run going on Saturday but couldn't hold it together at the end," said Towlerton. "Instead of backing off on Sunday, he didn't slow down a bit but stayed on track at the bottom to win it. Sam's starting to put it all together and has the potential to get even faster going forward," said Towlerton. Micah Evonitz finished 13th and Bobby Moyer finished 15th for AVSC out of a field of 107 racers.

According to Towlerton, it was the first race that Sam and Joanna's parents were watching them race in person. "What a great day to watch your kids compete," he remarked. Both of the Coffeys left Wednesday to compete in slalom and giant slalom at Park City at the USSA Western Region Qualifiers. "They're stepping up to race against more skiers from the top college teams this week. Having momentum going into this weekend will help both of them."
