January 19, 2010

Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club alumni athlete and Aspen native Michael Ward was named to the U.S. Nordic Junior World Team and will be competing in Nordic Combined at the World Junior Championships in Hinterzarten, Germany later this month, January 25-31. Ward, the son of AVSC Nordic Ski Jumping coach and former Olympian Craig Ward, was named to the team after a finishing second then first at the World Junior Qualifier in Lake Placid, New York. Those results crowned him the North American Junior Champion in Nordic Combined, a combination of ski jumping and cross-country skiing, and punched his ticket to Germany.

"I was psyched," Ward said about joining the veteran American team in a recent article in the Steamboat Pilot. "I can't explain the feeling, but I was pretty excited when I got the news." Ward, who starting ski jumping at AVSC but now trains in Steamboat Springs, joins Cliff Field, Taylor Fletcher, Brett Denney and Nick Henderson. Coach Martin Beyer likes their chances. "It's really exciting because this group has a real chance to reach the podium," Bayer said. "I'm looking forward to the trip, and I think we have five really strong guys."
