Tiny Fraction Separates Coffey from Winter Park Downhill Win

by Alan Cole
February 1, 2010

The margin of victory in ski racing is one 1/100ths of a second and that's all that separated Sam Coffey from winning the second Downhill race on Wednesday at the Surefoot Colorado Ski Cup speed series at Winter Park on January 23-24. Coffey missed out on gold in Downhill by the smallest fraction possible. "What a heartbreaker," remarked AVSC Alpine Ability Head Coach Kent Towlerton. "It was as tight as it gets." Coffey continues to create opportunities for himself and move up the standings for speed events with two Downhill second place results, third in one Super-G race and sixth in Super Combined (a combined Slalom and Super-G race). "Sam's hungry and it's only a matter of time until he's on top of the podium," said Towlerton.

Teammate Alex Binks finished 11th in Sunday's Super Combined to go along with fifth and eighth place in the Downhill races. Micah Evonitz, who has been making his move the standings lately, took 10th and 11th in the Downhills while Nathan Wood finished 12th and 10th. "Micah has stepped up his game this season and is showing us what he can do," said Towlerton. 15 year-old J2 skier Bobby Moyer flew down the course to take ninth in Super-G, a strong finish that caught the eye of his coach. "Bobby had a stellar result that race considering he's a first-year J2," remarked Towlerton. " He's showing a lot of potential."

17 year-old Katie Ryan blew past several college skiers to take fourth overall in both Super-G races. "Katie finished first among the skiers in her age class in both races," said Towlerton. Ryan followed with a fifth place result in Super Combined, and fourth and second place finishes in the two Downhill races. "Katie's come on strong and just punched her ticket to the J2 Junior Nationals with those results," said Towlerton. Sara Andrews finished eighth and seventh, Kate Mickey was 11th and 16th and Sarah Gregory was 17th twice in the two Downhill races. "It was really good training for all of them. Having solid results across the board helps as our older athletes will be headed to NorAms later this month," said Towlerton. "As a whole our team is coming along in speed events and these races were a great opportunity to get more competition experience."
