AVSC All-Team Award Winners Announced
Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club formally announced this year's All-Team Award winners at the Club's annual Awards Banquet at Bumps Restaurant on April 10th. The All-Team Awards are given out to one athlete or volunteer chosen from qualified nominees representing each discipline. The winners reflect the best aspects of the Club.
The Henry Filip Award is given in recognition of excellence and dedication in volunteer coaching. The award honors the memory of Henry Filip, a volunteer coach during the late 1980's and early '90s. Henry was a beloved coach and a vibrant person filled with a zest for life who passed away in a kayaking accident in 1997. This year's Henry Filip Award winner was Mirte Mallory, an AVSC alum and volunteer coach with AVSC's Nordic Program.
The Willoughby Award is named in honor of Frank Willoughby, one of the founding fathers of the Club who served two terms as President of the Board in the late 1930's and mid '40s. Frank was the first snow-cat operator on Aspen Mountain. The award goes to the athlete demonstrating outstanding achievement in both athletics and academics. Alpine ski racer Alex Maple was this year's winner of the Willoughby Award.
The Pursuit of Excellence Awards are given to recognize one athlete from each discipline who has demonstrated the drive to excel in their sport as well as modeling AVSC's core values of Commitment, Teamwork and Integrity. The winners this year were Jen Hudak (Freestyle/Freeride), Katie Ryan (Alpine), Riley Heald (Nordic) and Molly Wilson (Snowboard).
The final award of the night was the Andy Mill Award, representing the athlete best achieving outstanding National and/or International results. Andy Mill was America's premier downhill ski racer throughout the 1970's. Andy demonstrated both phenomenal athletic skill and the ability to overcome adversity by finishing 6th in the 1976 Olympics despite a leg injury. The Pursuit of Excellence Award winners are the nominees for this award. This year, the Andy Mill Award went to Jen Hudak. Jen won Gold at both the U.S. and European X-Games in Women's Ski Halfpipe as well as winning the U.S. National Championships.
In one of the night's most special moments, the Andy Mill Award included a check for $500 that Jen promptly donated back to AVSC's scholarship program.
