CROSS-COUNTRY AND NORDIC COMBINED EXPLAINED Cross-Country skiing involves two different techniques, Classic and Skating. Classic is the traditional technique that usually comes to mind when someone thinks of cross-country skiing. Skating is a faster technique that involves pushing the skis in a sideways motions similar to ice skating. All AVSC Nordic programs teach both Classic and Skating techniques.
Nordic Combined is an Olympic Sport that combines cross-country skiing and Nordic jumping. Participants will ski and jump on alternate days. New jumpers will learn the basics on our beginner jump next to the clubhouse then graduate to our larger jump on Eagle Hill / Tiehack. Nordic Combined options are available in both the BaseCamp and Team level programs.
AVSC does not offer a jumping only program.
EQUIPMENT Youth Nordic equipment can be difficult to come by once the season starts. The Ute Mountaineer and Aspen Cross-Country Center are your best sources for equipment. The ski swaps are hit and miss but usually do not offer a good selection of youth Nordic equipment.
The Nordic Equipment Night, Thursday, September 17th at 6:30 p.m. at AVSC will be your best opportunity of the year to obtain equipment. The Ute Mountaineer will be offering clothing and equipment at reduced prices and coaches and manufacutres representatives will be on hand to answer questions and offer recommendations. AVSC will have a limited supply of rental equipment available and there will be an informal swap - bring in your used gear and price it. Equipment Selection Guide
