| | | AVSC Freestyle Director Eric Knight | | The 2008-2009 season will mark Eric's 12th season coaching and 9th year as AVSC Freestyle Director. Under Eric's leadership, the Freestyle Team has tripled in size and won National Junior Championships in moguls and aerials. AVSC freestyle also boasts Domestic Coach of the Year Elana Chase and World Cup Halfpipe Champion Jen Hudak. Eric was the 1995 British National Mogul Champion and a member of the British Freestyle Team from 1995 to 1998. He has competed in Nor-Am, Europa Cup, World Cup and World Pro Mogul events around the world and brings his knowledge and experience from the highest levels of freestyle skiing to AVSC. | | AVSC Nordic Director John Callahan | | | John Callahan is a former U.S. Ski Team member. This will be John's 5th year as Nordic Director. John led the AVSC nordic program to become High School National Champions in two of the last three years and has created our Nordic jumping program and Nordic festival with sprints in Wagner Park. John participated in the 1992 Olympics in Albertville, France and was ranked 3rd in the U.S. in nordic skiing from 1991-1993. John grew up in Aspen and was an alpine skier with AVSC before switching to nordic skiing in college. | | AVSC Alpine Director Jeff Kai | | This will be Jeff's second year at AVSC. Jeff has taken our Alpine program to new heights, with champions in each age class last season and AVSC skier Wiley Maple named to the U.S. Ski Team this spring. Jeff has 15 years of professional experience including 7 as a Head Coach for Mount Hood Academy and most recently 6 years as a Development Coach for USSA's Western Region. Jeff has been a key player in the region's success. | | AVSC Snowboarding Director Miah Wheeler | | | This will be Miah's 8th year with AVSC, 5th year as Snowboard Director. Miah has been a coach at the Club since 2001 and has taught snowboarding for 10 years. Miah's focus on teaching freestyle snowboarding has yielded outstanding results for his athletes at the USASA Nationals for the past two years. Miah holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from Fort Lewis College in Durango and has also achieved success as a kayak instructor. In 2002, he was the youngest member ever granted certification to train instructors from the American Canoe Association. | | Base Camp Program Director Susan Blakney | | | This season will be Susans fourth year as Director of Base Camp Programs and she has been involved with AVSC for 16 years. Susan coached AVSCs RidgeRunner program for 4 years before taking over as the on-snow coordinator, a position she held for 8 years. As Base Camp Director, Susan arranges ski and snowboard lessons for approximately 1400 kids and organizes a chaperoned bus service for down valley participants. Susans 16 years of employment with the Ski Schools of Aspen gives her a unique ability to work as a liaison between the Aspen Valley Ski/Snowboard Club, the Aspen Skiing Company, and the community. In addition to being the Base Camp Director, Susan is also a level III Professional Ski Instructor of America and a Ski Schools of Aspen instructor trainer. She holds a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Colorado, but her greatest achievement remains getting kids out on the slopes. |
